Supreme Court Cancels Bail of Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni in BJP Worker Murder Case
In a major legal and political development, the Supreme Court of India on Friday cancelled the bail of Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni, accused in the murder of BJP worker Yogesh Gowda, and directed him to surrender within one week. The apex court’s decision follows serious allegations of witness tampering and attempts to influence the trial process.

Yogesh Gowda, a local BJP leader from Dharwad, was brutally murdered in June 2016. The case, initially investigated by local police, was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to its sensitive political nature.
Vinay Kulkarni, a former minister in the Karnataka government, was arrested in 2020 by the CBI for his alleged involvement in the murder. He was accused of conspiring to eliminate Gowda over political rivalry and personal enmity. In its ruling, the Supreme Court observed that the material presented by the prosecution indicates “deliberate efforts by the accused to obstruct justice.” The bench stated that such conduct warranted immediate cancellation of bail.
“There is sufficient material on record suggesting attempts have been made by the accused to either contact or influence witnesses,” the court stated, adding that bail cannot be sustained in the “totality of the circumstances.”
As a result, the top court directed Kulkarni to surrender within a week to the concerned trial court or jail authorities.
