Pakistan’s Defence Minister Declares Madrassa Students as ‘Second Line of Defence’ Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions

In a statement that has drawn international scrutiny, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif announced that madrassa students would serve as the country’s “second line of defence” amid escalating tensions with India. The declaration was made during a parliamentary session on May 9, following a series of retaliatory drone strikes between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

A Controversial Declaration

Addressing the National Assembly, Asif stated, “As far as madrassas or madrassa students are concerned, there’s no doubt they are our second line of defence… When the time comes, they will be used as needed 100 percent.”

This assertion has raised concerns both domestically and internationally, with critics warning about the implications of involving religious students in military affairs. Human rights organizations and education advocates have expressed alarm over the potential militarization of educational institutions.

Escalating Military Actions

The minister’s comments come in the wake of intensified military exchanges between India and Pakistan. India recently conducted drone strikes targeting Pakistani air defense systems, including installations in Lahore, as a response to a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed 26 lives.

Pakistan reported shooting down multiple Indian drones, including Israeli-made Harop drones, and claimed that some of these drones were intended for surveillance and offensive operations.

International Reactions

The international community has reacted with concern to both the military escalation and Asif’s remarks. Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak defended India’s right to retaliate against terrorist infrastructure, emphasizing the need for nations to protect their citizens.

Meanwhile, other global leaders have called for restraint and dialogue to prevent further deterioration of regional stability.

Implications for Religious Education

Asif’s statement has sparked a debate about the role of religious educational institutions in national defense. Madrassas in Pakistan have historically been centers for religious learning, but concerns have been raised about their potential involvement in militancy.

Education experts and civil society organizations are urging the government to clarify its stance and ensure that educational institutions remain separate from military operations.
