How India Can Build 5,500 km of E-Highways by 2027: Insights from Abhijeet Sinha

India is set to transform its transportation sector by developing a 5,500 km network of electric highways (e-highways) by 2027. Spearheaded by the National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV), this ambitious project aims to facilitate the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and contribute significantly to the nation’s sustainability goals.

Vision and Strategy

The e-highway initiative is designed to transform existing national highways and expressways into EV-friendly corridors equipped with state-of-the-art charging infrastructure. Abhijeet Sinha, Project Director of NHEV and National Programme Director for Ease of Doing Business, highlights the critical role of incorporating cutting-edge technologies and sustainable energy solutions into the initiative. The plan includes the installation of third-generation green fuel charging stations capable of dispensing hydrogen, alongside grid, solar, and wind power, ensuring a diverse and resilient energy supply for EVs.

Infrastructure and Implementation

The project is being executed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with an estimated investment of ₹5,500 crore (approximately $660 million USD). A significant portion of this budget is allocated to infrastructure development, including the establishment of 111 charging stations across 23 cities in 12 states. These stations will offer high-capacity charging for various types of electric vehicles, including cars, buses, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers .

Pilot projects have already demonstrated the feasibility of this initiative. Successful pilot runs on the Delhi-Agra and Delhi-Jaipur routes have laid the groundwork for broader expansion.. Ongoing technical trials on the Chennai-Trichy, Chennai-Visakhapatnam, and Visakhapatnam-Bhubaneswar corridors are expected to provide valuable insights for scaling up the network .

Technological Innovations

A key innovation in the e-highway project is the integration of hydrogen dispensing capabilities at charging stations. This feature is particularly beneficial for heavy vehicles, allowing for rapid refueling and extended range. Surplus solar and wind energy will be stored as liquid hydrogen, optimizing energy utilization and reducing dependency on the grid .

Additionally, the implementation of geo-fencing technology will enhance security and operational efficiency. This technology enables real-time monitoring of vehicles and infrastructure, facilitating prompt response to any issues and ensuring the safety of passengers and cargo .

Economic and Environmental Impact

The e-highway project is expected to yield significant economic and environmental benefits. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the initiative will contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. The development of EV infrastructure will also stimulate economic growth by creating employment opportunities and fostering innovation in clean technologies.

Furthermore, the integration of electric buses into the public transport system, as part of the Vision 2030: PM Public Transport Sewa initiative, will complement the e-highway network. This holistic approach aims to replace a substantial number of diesel buses with electric alternatives, further reducing emissions and promoting sustainable urban mobility .

Conclusion

India’s initiative to build a 5,500 km e-highway network by 2027 marks a major milestone in its journey toward reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.Through strategic planning, technological innovation, and collaborative efforts, the nation is setting a global benchmark in sustainable transportation infrastructure. As Abhijeet Sinha aptly states, “This project goes beyond road construction—it’s about creating a pathway to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.”
