Punjab Police’s ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ Campaign: 131 Arrests and 1.7 kg Heroin Seized on Day 50
In a significant stride towards eradicating the drug menace, Punjab Police marked the 50th day of their anti-drug initiative, ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh,’ with substantial arrests and narcotics seizures. On April 19, 2025, authorities apprehended 131 drug smugglers and confiscated 1.7 kg of heroin, underscoring their commitment to a drug-free Punjab.
Statewide Crackdown:
The operation spanned all 28 police districts of Punjab, with over 220 police teams comprising more than 2,000 personnel executing coordinated raids at 468 locations. This extensive crackdown led to the registration of 82 First Information Reports (FIRs) and the detention of 131 individuals involved in drug trafficking. Additionally, 528 suspicious individuals were checked during the operation.
Seizures and Enforcement Actions:
In a notable enforcement action, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation, demolished an illegally constructed property linked to three notorious drug smugglers. The individuals, identified as Lakhvir Kaur, Sandeep Kumar, and Suraj, had multiple registered cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Government’s Commitment:
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has consistently emphasized the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards drugs. He has directed law enforcement agencies to ensure that procured crops are lifted within 72 hours and payments to farmers are processed promptly. Furthermore, a Cabinet Sub-Committee led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has been constituted to oversee the anti-drug operations.
Rehabilitation Efforts:
Beyond enforcement, the Punjab Police have implemented a three-pronged strategy focusing on Enforcement, Prevention, and Rehabilitation (EDP). As part of the rehabilitation initiative, authorities have encouraged individuals caught with small quantities of narcotics to undergo treatment under Section 64-A of the NDPS Act. This approach aims to reintegrate drug users into society while continuing the fight against drug trafficking.
