Harjot Singh Bains Calls for Nangal’s Revival: Proposes Major Development Projects
Chandigarh, April 19, 2025 — In a significant move to rejuvenate Nangal, Punjab Education Minister and MLA from Sri Anandpur Sahib, S. Harjot Singh Bains, met with Union Power Minister Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar in Chandigarh on Saturday. Bains presented a comprehensive proposal aimed at restoring Nangal’s lost grandeur and transforming it into a model city and world-class tourist destination.
Nangal’s Historical Significance and Decline
Nangal, developed around the iconic Bhakra Nangal Dam, was once celebrated as one of India’s most beautiful, well-planned, and vibrant towns during the 1960s and 70s. Its tree-lined avenues, structured layout, and rich cultural life were a source of pride for Punjab and the entire nation. However, over the years, the town has experienced a gradual decline, losing its former charm and infrastructure.
Proposed Development Projects
To restore Nangal to its former glory, Minister Bains has proposed several key development initiatives:
- Township Redevelopment
Bains emphasized the need for a comprehensive township redevelopment plan. He pointed out the absence of basic urban amenities such as cinema halls, shopping complexes, and recreational centers. By leasing a portion of the available land transparently, the government aims to create recreational zones, shopping arcades, urban parks, and employment hubs, enhancing the quality of life for residents and generating revenue for the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
- Nangal Lake Riverfront Development
Highlighting the scenic beauty of the River View Road adjoining Sadan, Bains proposed transforming this stretch into a world-class riverfront. The plan includes developing a serene promenade with walking tracks, cycling paths, eateries, and cultural spaces, aiming to attract tourists and provide leisure for locals.
- Scenic Railway Line as a Tourist Attraction
Bains suggested utilizing the old railway line from Nangal to Bhakra Dam, which runs through scenic terrain, as a major tourist draw. The proposal includes introducing a new glass-roof heritage train or a light rail service along this route to offer a unique experience and put Nangal back on the national tourism map.
- Completion of Bhakra Nangal Dam Museum
Despite multiple foundation stones being laid over the years, the Bhakra Nangal Dam Museum remains incomplete. Bains urged for the Union Power Minister’s personal intervention to ensure the completion of this long-pending project. Once completed, the museum is envisioned as a center of learning and pride, showcasing India’s engineering marvels and post-independence development history.
Lease Policy Reform
Addressing the concerns of thousands of families residing in Nangal for decades, Bains called for a revised lease policy. He emphasized the need for a transparent, humane, and revenue-generating lease policy that would provide security to residents, resolve long-pending legal disputes, and allow BBMB to earn stable rent.
Minister’s Appeal for Intervention
Minister Bains passionately appealed to Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar for intervention to revive Nangal. He stated that Nangal doesn’t seek mercy but rather a revival and a rewrite of its destiny. Bains’s efforts align with the Punjab government’s commitment to transforming Nangal into a vibrant and prosperous city.
