Putin Hails Alaska Summit as Diplomatic Reset

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Russian President Vladimir Putin described his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump as a long overdue step to restore dialogue between Washington and Moscow. Speaking after the Alaska Summit 2025, Putin stressed that U.S.-Russia relations had reached their lowest point since the Cold War and required urgent repair.

“Obviously, sooner or later, it was necessary to move from confrontation to dialogue,” Putin told reporters. He underlined that the four-year gap without top-level talks had created mistrust globally, making this summit a crucial reset.

Both leaders reportedly discussed Ukraine, economic cooperation, and long-term global security. Putin praised Trump for taking an active role in seeking peace and said Moscow was ready to work constructively.

Ukraine at the Center of Talks

The war in Ukraine dominated the discussion. Putin acknowledged that for Russia, the conflict carried national security concerns but also described Ukrainians as “a brotherly people,” framing the war as a personal tragedy for Russians.

He welcomed Trump’s stated commitment to securing Ukraine and emphasized that any sustainable solution must address the root causes of the crisis.

“All of Russia’s legitimate concerns must be taken into account,” Putin said, adding that only a balanced approach could ensure lasting peace in Europe. He urged Kyiv and European capitals to act constructively, warning against provocations that could derail progress.

According to Putin, the summit may mark the first step toward opening a pathway to peace, though challenges remain.

Economic and Arctic Cooperation

Beyond security, Putin emphasized untapped opportunities for U.S.-Russia business cooperation. He pointed to energy, technology, digital innovation, and space exploration as areas of potential growth.

“The Russian-American partnership has enormous potential,” he said, adding that trade and investment could expand if political trust improved. He also proposed renewed collaboration in the Arctic and stronger ties between Russia’s Far East and the American West Coast.

Analysts note that reviving business links could benefit both nations at a time of global economic uncertainty.

Growing Trust With Trump

Putin described his discussions with Trump as “business-like and trusting,” noting that personal diplomacy could accelerate solutions to the Ukraine conflict.

“I believe that by moving along this path, we can – the quicker the better – reach an end to the conflict,” he said.

The Russian leader signaled optimism that this summit could be a turning point, not only for Ukraine but also for rebuilding pragmatic ties with Washington.
