Controversial Truth Social posts by Trump showing Greenland as US territory spark global attention, diplomatic pushback and fact‑checking scrutiny.

U.S. President Donald Trump sparked widespread debate after sharing multiple posts on his Truth Social platform that have gone viral and attracted international commentary. One widely circulated image showed Trump alongside European leaders with a U.S. flag that depicted Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela as part of the United States—a graphic that appears to be AI‑generated and symbolic rather than an official map.

Another post showed him with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio beside a mock flag in Greenland labeled “Greenland U.S. Territory Est. 2026,” contributing to discussion about Trump’s repeated public interest in the Arctic island’s status.

Trump’s online activity comes amid his intensified push to assert more influence over Greenland, a self‑governing Danish territory. He has described Greenland as vital for U.S. and global security and has even threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark and other European nations if negotiations over Greenland’s control do not produce results, arguing the territory’s strategic location is important in countering rivals such as China and Russia.

In response to the heightened focus on Greenland, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced that military aircraft will be deployed to the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland. NORAD emphasized this deployment is part of long‑planned defence operations carried out in coordination with Denmark and Greenland, though the timing has drawn attention given the ongoing geopolitical debate.

The posts also referenced developments in Venezuela, including Trump’s statements about a U.S. military operation that allegedly led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. However, fact‑checking organisations have found that some images and claims circulating online—including depictions of Maduro’s alleged capture—were AI‑generated or misleading and not confirmed as genuine documentation of events.

Trump’s rhetoric on both Greenland and Venezuela has drawn criticism from European leaders and allied countries, who have reaffirmed sovereignty claims and stressed respect for international law. Meanwhile, Danish and Greenland officials have rejected any notion of transferring control of Greenland to the United States and reaffirmed the territory’s current status within the Kingdom of Denmark.
