A strong explosion tore through a well-known bar in Crans-Montana, one of Switzerland’s most upscale ski resorts, turning the joyous New Year’s ambiance into a scene of destruction, killing multiple people and injuring others. The event, which shocked the alpine town known for its opulent tourists and exciting nightlife, was verified by Swiss police early on Thursday.

A Popular Nightlife Spot Is Exploded

Around 1:30 a.m. local time (0030 GMT), the explosion happened at Le Constellation, a popular pub that both locals and visitors come to celebrate the start of the New Year. The location was packed with people taking part in late-night celebrations when the explosion occurred.

As the explosion tore through the property and caused flames to swiftly devour portions of the building, witnesses recounted moments of panic. Celebrations quickly descended into chaos as smoke and fire spread, and people inside hurried to flee.

According to a report by the regional Swiss daily Le Nouvelliste, its sources were characterizing the aftermath of the Crans Montana explosion as taking “a heavy toll,” with an estimated 40 persons killed and 100 injured.

Emergency Reaction and Continued Rescue Operations

As police, firefighters, and medical personnel raced to the site, Swiss media reported photographs of the bar engulfed in flames. Throughout the night, emergency personnel tried to put out the fire, evacuate the area, and tend to the injured.

The reason of the explosion is still unknown, Wallis canton police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion told AFP. The area around the bar has been cordoned off by authorities, and forensic teams have started investigating the scene to find out what caused the explosion.

While investigations determine whether gas, electrical faults, or other factors may have contributed, rescue personnel have concentrated on securing the structure to prevent more risk.
