Balochistan on the Brink: Militants Seize Checkposts as Independence Movement Intensifies

Tensions in Pakistan’s Balochistan province have sharply escalated following the seizure of security checkposts by armed militants, reigniting fears of a broader separatist insurgency. Over the weekend, militant forces launched a coordinated offensive, overtaking a key security checkpost in the Kachhi district while setting up blockades in the Rarhsham area of Barkhan.

The attack, attributed to the banned separatist outfit Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), marked one of the most organized strikes in recent memory, further straining Islamabad’s already challenged control over the restive region.

Strategic Areas Declared ‘Sensitive’

In response to the growing unrest, authorities on Monday declared parts of the Surab district and Zehri Tehsil of Khuzdhar “sensitive zones.” The Assistant Commissioner of Zehri named Anjeera, Najjeera, Archino, Garm-aap, Gazzan, and Balbal as high-risk areas due to suspected militant activity and ongoing security operations.

Military reinforcements quickly followed. According to The Balochistan Post, over 40 military vehicles and large contingents of troops were deployed into the affected zones, indicating the seriousness of the situation. Analysts view this mobilization as Islamabad’s latest counterinsurgency effort in a province where nationalist sentiment has simmered for decades.

Operation Herof: A Coordinated Separatist Offensive

On May 9 and 10, while international attention remained focused on escalating Indo-Pakistani military tensions, the Baloch Liberation Army launched a massive offensive named “Exercise for Operation Herof.” The operation reportedly involved more than 71 attacks on 51 locations across Balochistan, including remote military outposts and communication networks.

While the Pakistani government has remained largely silent about the operation, sources from independent news platforms and rights groups suggest that the offensive marked a turning point in the insurgent strategy — from scattered ambushes to coordinated military-style operations.

Human Rights in Crisis: Enforced Disappearances Surge

Parallel to the rising militant activities, human rights violations in the province continue unabated. Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP), a local watchdog organization, reported at least 23 cases of enforced disappearances in April alone. Victims include student journalists, social workers, and political activists.

Although the Pakistani government denies these allegations, claiming that all actions fall under legitimate counter-terrorism operations, international human rights organizations disagree. A 2024 report from Human Rights Watch described Balochistan as a “zone of impunity,” citing routine instances of custodial torture, forced disappearances, and media censorship.

“The suppression of civil society is not collateral damage — it is a deliberate tactic,” the report stated.

Crackdown and Selective Relief

In a surprising move, the Balochistan Home Department announced on May 6 that it was withdrawing the detention orders of 150 political workers and activists. However, prominent figures like Dr. Maharang Baloch, a leading voice of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, remain in custody under Pakistan’s public order laws, along with six others.

This selective release strategy has sparked criticism from civil rights advocates, who argue that the government is trying to temper international scrutiny without enacting meaningful reforms or ending authoritarian measures.

What This Means for Regional Stability

The latest developments in Balochistan signal a dangerous shift in both separatist tactics and state responses. The growing frequency and intensity of militant operations, coupled with widespread reports of human rights abuses, may draw greater global attention and concern. With major powers watching South Asia closely due to its strategic importance, any escalation in Balochistan could have far-reaching consequences.
