YouTube has introduced updates to its Premium Lite plan, adding two long-requested features that narrow the gap between Premium Lite and the full Premium subscription. However, music-related benefits continue to remain exclusive to the higher-tier plan. The updated version is being rolled out in regions where Premium Lite is already available and will expand to more markets in the coming weeks.
YouTube Premium Lite Pricing and Plan Comparison
In India, the pricing remains unchanged. The YouTube Premium Lite plan costs Rs. 89 per month, while the full YouTube Premium subscription is priced at Rs. 149 per month. Both plans are designed for different types of users based on their viewing and listening habits, allowing subscribers to choose according to their needs.
Premium Lite primarily caters to users focused on video streaming, offering limited additional benefits. In contrast, the full Premium plan provides a completely ad-free experience across all videos, along with background playback, offline downloads, and access to YouTube Music Premium. Users seeking uninterrupted music streaming and music video playback will still need to opt for the full subscription.

New Features Introduced in YouTube Premium Lite
Based on user feedback, YouTube has added two of the most requested features to the YouTube Premium Lite plan:
Background Play: Videos continue playing even when the app is minimised or the screen is locked.
Offline Downloads: Users can download videos to watch later without an internet connection.
With this update, most non-music content on Premium Lite will now be ad-free, support background playback, and be available for offline viewing. Music-related content, however, remains restricted to the full Premium tier.

The updated plan is particularly beneficial for users who use YouTube to consume podcasts, interviews, lectures, debates, and other long-form content. Background play makes multitasking easier, while offline downloads are helpful in areas with weak or no internet connectivity.
Additionally, users who already subscribe to music streaming platforms such as Spotify or Apple Music may find Premium Lite to be a more affordable alternative, as they may not require YouTube Music’s features.
