India has quickly emerged as one of the most important markets for OpenAI, with its ChatGPT user base growing rapidly. Just before the AI Impact Summit 2026, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that ChatGPT now has 100 million weekly active users in India as of February 2026. This milestone highlights the country’s strong engagement with artificial intelligence (AI) and positions India as a global hub for AI adoption, learning, and experimentation.
OpenAI Confirms Rapid ChatGPT Growth in India
According to reports in the Times of India, Sam Altman noted that India is now the second-largest market for ChatGPT, after the United States. He emphasized that the growth momentum in India has been consistent for several months.

Altman also highlighted that India has the largest number of students using ChatGPT worldwide, reflecting how young people are leveraging AI to “learn faster and get ahead.” Additionally, India ranks fourth globally in the use of Prism, OpenAI’s free AI tool for scientific research and collaboration.
Sam Altman to Attend AI Impact Summit 2026
Sam Altman confirmed his attendance at the AI Impact Summit 2026, taking place at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, from 16–20 February. The five-day event will include keynote addresses, exhibitions, and sessions with global technology leaders and policymakers, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
OpenAI’s Strategy in India
The surge in ChatGPT usage aligns with OpenAI’s broader plans for India. In August 2025, the company launched the ChatGPT Go subscription tier in India, an affordable option, even offered for free at times. That same month, OpenAI announced its first India office in New Delhi and shared plans to establish multiple data centers across the country.
With this rapid growth, India is solidifying its role as a key market for OpenAI and a hotspot for AI innovation.
