Cloudburst in Chamoli: Several Feared Missing

Rescue operations underway as debris buries homes and roads in Uttarakhand

How the disaster struck

A powerful cloudburst hit Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district late Friday night, leaving several people feared missing. The incident caused massive debris flow through residential and market areas, damaging houses, shops, and government buildings.

Officials confirmed that the Tharali tehsil complex and nearby Tharali market were among the worst affected. The official residence of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) was also buried under heavy debris. Vehicles and dozens of shops were destroyed, while locals rushed out of their homes in panic.

In Sagwara village, a young girl was reportedly trapped under a collapsed building, sparking urgent rescue efforts. Authorities have warned that the extent of damage may rise once all affected areas are fully assessed.

Roads blocked, markets damaged

The cloudburst disrupted connectivity in Chamoli as the Tharali–Gwaldam road and the Tharali–Sagwara road were blocked by debris. The collapse of infrastructure has restricted movement and hindered relief supplies.

Shops in Chepdon market were damaged, further compounding the difficulties for residents who rely on local markets for essential goods. Continuous rainfall in the region has slowed down road clearance and created fresh risks of landslides.

District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said, “There is a possibility of significant damage due to the cloudburst in Tharali. Many houses, including the SDM’s residence, have been completely destroyed.”

Rescue operations in full swing

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) reached the affected areas late last night. Rescue workers have been evacuating residents to safer locations, even as blocked roads and heavy rains complicate operations.

Additional District Magistrate Vivek Prakash told reporters that relief camps have been set up. “NDRF and SDRF teams moved to the spot last night. The road has been blocked and people are facing many problems. The administration is engaged in relief work and we have set up camps for the displaced families,” he said.

The Chamoli police confirmed that many locals were promptly evacuated. “Due to heavy rainfall, public life was affected. Considering the severity, Tharali police evacuated people from their homes during the night,” the statement added.

Chief Minister monitoring the situation

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he is personally monitoring the relief work. In a post on X, he wrote, “Late last night, a tragic report of a cloudburst was received in Tharali, Chamoli. District administration, SDRF, and police are at the spot. I am in constant contact with officials and monitoring the situation closely. I pray for everyone’s safety.”

The Chief Minister also directed authorities to provide timely relief to the affected families. His office confirmed that funds from the State Disaster Response Fund would be used for immediate assistance.

Seasonal pattern of extreme rains

This is not the first cloudburst in Uttarakhand this season. Earlier in August, similar incidents in Harsil and Dharali triggered flash floods, leaving several people missing and infrastructure destroyed.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in the state until August 25. Forecasts warn of heavy rain in Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Nainital, Dehradun, Tehri, and Uttarkashi over the coming days.

Experts caution that repeated cloudbursts, combined with fragile Himalayan terrain, make districts like Chamoli highly vulnerable to disasters. Environmentalists have urged the state government to improve early warning systems, strengthen slope stabilization projects, and regulate construction in flood-prone zones.

Conclusion

The Chamoli cloudburst has once again highlighted Uttarakhand’s fragile ecosystem and the risks of extreme weather. While rescue operations continue, the focus now lies on preventing further loss of life and restoring essential infrastructure. With heavy rains forecast in the coming days, the administration faces a critical test in protecting vulnerable communities from recurring natural disasters.
