Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Khanna is expected to announce an increase in pensions for over 1.06 crore destitute women across the state during a session in the Assembly today. The scheme was first highlighted by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on February 13 while discussing the motion of thanks on the Governor’s address.

The proposed pension hike will benefit women under social security schemes, including Divyang women, senior citizens, and other destitute women. Details of the revised pension amount are anticipated to be revealed by Minister Khanna during the Assembly proceedings.

Yogi Government to Raise Destitute Women’s Pension from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 Per Month

Before 2017, destitute women in Uttar Pradesh received ₹300 per month, while other eligible beneficiaries were given ₹500. After CM Yogi Adityanath assumed office, the pension amount was increased to ₹1,000 per month. During the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP had pledged to further raise the pension to ₹1,500 per month for destitute women, a promise the government is now set to fulfill.

In total, Uttar Pradesh provides old age pensions to 67.5 lakh people, pensions for 38.5 lakh destitute women, and assistance to 11 lakh persons with disabilities. The new announcement is expected to officially increase the monthly pension to ₹1,500 or more, offering greater financial support to the state’s most vulnerable women.

The move is being closely watched, as it is also seen as a strategy to appeal to women voters ahead of the next Assembly elections.
