Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday strongly defended his government’s policing strategy, saying firm action against criminals is crucial to restore public safety after years of lawlessness in the state.
Speaking at a public event, Yogi Adityanath stated that the police have been empowered to act decisively against armed criminals. He emphasized that if offenders resort to firing, the police are trained and equipped to respond effectively, ensuring they understand the consequences of breaking the law.
The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath remarks come amid increased scrutiny of police encounters in Uttar Pradesh. Recently, the Allahabad High Court expressed concern over “half encounters,” noting that some officers might be firing to gain personal recognition, early promotions, or social media publicity. The court stressed that only the judiciary has the authority to punish accused individuals.

Reflecting on the situation prior to 2017, Yogi Adityanath said the state experienced over 900 riots between 2012 and 2017. Curfews were common in many cities, extortion was widespread, and crime had infiltrated everyday life, creating constant pressure on traders and citizens. He said this situation prompted his government to adopt a strict zero-tolerance policy after taking office.
Yogi Adityanath Government Commitment to Fair and Swift Action
Yogi Adityanath asserted that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of political or personal affiliations. He added that there can be no leniency for criminals, whether ordinary offenders or influential figures. Responding to criticism over police firing, he said inaction would make maintaining law and order impossible.
Yogi Adityanath further highlighted that before 2017, riots, kidnappings, and extortion were rampant, forcing businessmen, doctors, and traders to pay protection money. Many youths and businesses left the state due to insecurity, he said, making it difficult for economic growth and stability.

Reiterating his government’s stance on fair enforcement, Yogi Adityanath said that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi entrusted him with the state’s leadership in 2017, the focus was clear: uphold the law and take swift action against criminals. While all measures are taken within the legal framework, decisive action is necessary when offenders show no fear of the law.
