A tragic Uttar Pradesh mine collapse in Sonbhadra has left at least three workers dead, while nine others are feared trapped under massive debris. The incident took place at the Billi Markundi mining site on Saturday, leading to a major rescue operation that continued through Sunday.
Officials confirmed that one worker died shortly after the collapse on Saturday. Additionally, two more bodies were recovered by rescue teams on Sunday, raising the death toll to three.
The mining site, located in a region known for heavy stone extraction, has now become the centre of an investigation. Rescue officials said the exact number of miners trapped is still being verified, since several workers were believed to be operating compressors and excavation tools at the time of the cave-in.
Magisterial Inquiry Ordered; Rescue Efforts Intensify
District Magistrate Badrinath Singh visited the collapse site and confirmed that a magisterial probe has been ordered. The inquiry will be led by Additional District Magistrate Vagish Singh, who will submit a detailed report. Action will be taken based on the findings, officials assured.
“A full probe has been ordered, and action will follow as soon as the report is submitted,” the district magistrate stated.
Moreover, Uttar Pradesh Minister Sanjeev Gond said that nearly 12 workers were believed to be present at the site when the mining structure gave way. He promised strict action against those responsible for any negligence.
Meanwhile, mining staff and families of the missing workers expressed fear and frustration. Workers reported that nine compressors were operating when the collapse occurred, with at least one operator assigned to each machine.
A miner, Chhotu Yadav, said that his two brothers, Santosh Yadav and Indrajit Yadav, were among those trapped. Families gathered at the site and waited for updates, hoping for survivors.
NDRF, SDRF and Police Teams Lead Rescue Operation
Additional Director General of Police Piyush Mordia confirmed that a large multi-agency rescue team is working to remove layers of stone and rubble. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the fire department are involved in the operation. Heavy equipment, including excavators and stone cutters, is being used to clear the site.
However, officials warned that the dense stone layers are slowing progress.
The terrain around Sonbhadra is known for deep mining shafts, and experts said improper reinforcement can cause sudden structural failure. Furthermore, the accident has triggered fresh questions about compliance with mining safety rules, worker equipment standards, and possible over-extraction in the region.
