Chandigarh: Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has accused the central government of betraying Indian farmers through the proposed India–US trade deal, warning that the agreement could cause serious harm to the country’s agricultural sector.
Sandhwan alleged that the trade pact would inflict deep damage on Indian farmers and undermine their long-term interests. He strongly criticised the BJP-led central government, claiming it has consistently misled the farming community on key policy decisions. Reiterating his support for the agricultural sector, he said the Punjab government stands firmly with farmers during this challenging period.
Sandhwan Warns Market Opening Without Safeguards Could Hurt Small Farmers
Expressing concern over the broader implications of the agreement, Sandhwan emphasised that opening domestic markets to foreign players without ensuring strong internal safeguards—such as fair and remunerative prices, adequate subsidies, improved infrastructure and effective risk protection—could create significant difficulties, particularly for small and marginal farmers.

Referring to the upcoming farmers’ protest, he described it as a clear warning sign for the Centre. He asserted that if the government genuinely believes the India–US trade agreement serves farmers’ interests, it must demonstrate this through transparency, detailed parliamentary debate and meaningful consultation with stakeholders.
Otherwise, he cautioned, the reform narrative surrounding the deal may once again fail to address the genuine concerns of the farming community, which plays a crucial role in feeding the nation.
