Punjab Vigilance Bureau Nabs Sub-Inspector Harmesh Kumar in Bribery Sting
Chandigarh, April 16, 2025 – In a significant development, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Sub-Inspector (SI) Harmesh Kumar, currently in charge of Police Post Kalwa under Noorpur Bedi police station in Rupnagar district, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹80,000.
The arrest follows a complaint from a resident of village Toora in Jalandhar district, who accused SI Kumar of demanding a total of ₹1,50,000 in exchange for assistance in a police case. According to the complainant, SI Kumar had already accepted ₹20,000 as the first installment and was caught red-handed by the VB’s Flying Squad while receiving the remaining ₹80,000.
A case has been registered against SI Kumar under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Flying Squad-1 police station in Mohali. The accused is currently under interrogation, and investigations are ongoing to determine if others were involved in the alleged corruption.
This arrest is part of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau’s continued efforts to combat corruption within the state’s police force. In 2024 alone, the Bureau apprehended 173 individuals red-handed in 134 trap cases, underscoring its commitment to maintaining integrity within law enforcement agencies.
