Ludhiana, India: Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh participated in a high-level meeting organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Ludhiana, focusing on advancing the Punjab prison reform rehabilitation initiative aimed at transforming correctional facilities into centres of healing and recovery.
The discussions highlighted how the Punjab prison reform rehabilitation initiative is designed to improve de-addiction services, mental healthcare, HIV prevention, and rehabilitation support for inmates across the state.
Vision Behind Punjab Prison Reform Rehabilitation Initiative
During the UNODC-led meeting, Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized that the Punjab prison reform rehabilitation initiative reflects the state government’s vision of making prisons more than just places of punishment.
He stated that under the prison reform rehabilitation initiative, correctional institutions will be developed into structured rehabilitation spaces where inmates receive proper medical care, psychological counselling, and addiction recovery support.
Focus on Mental Health and De-addiction Services
A key component of the prison reform rehabilitation initiative is strengthening mental health services and de-addiction treatment inside prisons. Officials discussed expanding counselling facilities, improving access to treatment, and ensuring long-term recovery mechanisms for inmates struggling with substance abuse.
