Punjab Government Awards ₹5 Lakh Grant to Society for Welfare of Handicapped on 58th Foundation Day
Chandigarh/Patiala, April 16, 2025: On the 58th Foundation Day of the Society for Welfare of Handicapped, Punjab’s Minister for Social Justice, Dr. Baljit Kaur, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to empowering differently-abled children. Addressing the gathering at the Deaf and Blind School in Saifdipur village, Dr. Kaur announced a ₹5 lakh grant to enhance the school’s infrastructure, underscoring the government’s dedication to inclusion and support for NGOs working in this sector.

Dr. Kaur emphasized that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab government is steadfast in its mission to create a “Rangla Punjab” by integrating every section of society, including the differently-abled. The Patiala School for the Deaf and Blind, managed by the Society, has been a pioneer in special education since its inception in 1967. Offering free residential education to children from 13 states, the school caters to students from pre-nursery to Class XII. In 2012, the institution expanded its services to include the Patiala School for the DeafBlind, addressing the needs of children with multiple disabilities. The school’s motto, “To make special children service providers, not service seekers,” reflects its commitment to fostering independence and self-reliance among its students

The Foundation Day event featured vibrant performances by students from the Patiala School for the Deaf, the School for the Blind, and the School for the Deaf-Blind. Colonel Karminder Singh, Secretary of the Society, shared that over 450 differently-abled students from 13 states, including Punjab, are currently studying at the school. Established in 1967, the institution has been providing free education for the past 58 years.
