Punjab Mobilizes Helicopter for Flood Relief

Gurdaspur, August 27 – In a first-of-its-kind humanitarian step, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has deployed the state government’s helicopter to rescue stranded families and deliver relief material in flood-hit areas.

The move comes as Punjab faces widespread devastation due to incessant rainfall. Many villages in districts like Gurdaspur remain cut off by floodwaters, leaving residents stranded without basic supplies.

“The people gave this helicopter to us by giving a massive mandate. Today, we are using it in their service,” Mann said during his tour of affected areas.

CM Conducts Field Visits in Gurdaspur

The Chief Minister, along with Cabinet colleagues, conducted a whirlwind visit to flood-affected Gurdaspur district. He inspected marooned villages and interacted with distressed residents.

Mann announced that while he will now travel by road for official duties, the state helicopter will remain dedicated to rescue operations and relief work.

He added that flood control rooms have been set up in every district. The government is keeping a close watch on water levels and is prepared to provide compensation for every single loss, whether it involves crops, livestock, or homes.

“I am personally monitoring the situation. Updates are being collected every hour through district administrations,” he said.

Government Focuses on Rescue and Relief

Mann assured that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring relief reaches even the most remote areas. He emphasized that the government’s top priority is to evacuate stranded families and safeguard lives.

All Cabinet ministers, MLAs, and senior officers have been directed to stay active in their constituencies. Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) have been asked to expedite relief work and ensure safe evacuation from low-lying areas.

“Succour is being provided even to the last person in the farthest villages. Relief efforts are receiving special thrust in the worst-hit areas,” Mann noted.

Special Girdawari to Assess Losses

To ensure fairness in relief distribution, the Chief Minister announced a special Girdawari (revenue assessment) to calculate damages caused by the floods.

He directed officials to conduct the process transparently so that compensation reaches every affected family. The state government has promised to cover losses related to crops, cattle, homes, and property.

Mann reiterated that people will be compensated for every penny lost during the disaster. “Our government is duty-bound to secure the interests of citizens in this grave crisis,” he added.

Strong Message of Commitment

The deployment of the helicopter marks the first time Punjab has used state aviation resources directly for disaster relief. It sends a strong message about the government’s people-first approach during natural calamities.

Massive relief operations are already underway, with active involvement of farmer groups, local volunteers, and state authorities. The government has assured that it will continue to focus on safety, rehabilitation, and timely compensation as the floods recede.
