Punjab is poised for a significant transformation in its horticulture sector, with a proposed investment of nearly ₹1,300 crore aimed at boosting farmers’ incomes and expanding opportunities in value addition and exports, said Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat on Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference, the minister shared insights from his recent visit to Sahyadri Farmers Producer Company Limited in Nashik, Maharashtra. He stated that Punjab plans to adopt key elements of Maharashtra’s successful horticulture model to help farmers secure higher returns through organised farming practices, improved processing systems and stronger market linkages. To further this objective, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Sahyadri to enhance the functioning of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) in Punjab through structured training and institutional support.

Mohinder Bhagat described the visit as highly productive, noting that the delegation examined how collective farming through FPOs can improve production standards, grading, packaging, processing and export potential. He highlighted that Sahyadri collaborates with thousands of farmers across more than 30,000 acres and exports fruits and vegetables to 42 countries, demonstrating how coordinated efforts can lead to greater prosperity for farmers.
During the visit, the delegation toured advanced packhouses, processing facilities, research farms and training centres, engaging directly with farmers and technical experts. The minister emphasised that Punjab’s farmers can benefit from scientific crop planning, enhanced quality control measures and robust market connections—key strengths observed in the Maharashtra model.

Referring to the MoU, Mohinder Bhagat said it will support the formation of stronger farmer groups in Punjab and provide them with training, technological assistance and professional guidance. This collaborative approach is expected to help farmers secure better prices and improve overall productivity.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the minister said Punjab is focused on promoting crop diversification towards horticulture, expanding value addition and ensuring sustainable income avenues for farmers. He added that with the right strategies in place, Punjab has the potential to become a leading horticulture hub in India.
