Dramatic Arrests in Rana Balachauria Murder Case
Punjab Police secured a major breakthrough in the Rana Balachauria murder case investigation this week as three accused, including two alleged shooters, were arrested at Howrah Railway Station in West Bengal. The arrests mark a key phase in a sprawling probe into the December 15, 2025 killing of kabaddi promoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh, popularly known as Rana Balachauria, during a crowded tournament in Sector 79, Sohana, Mohali.
The detainees — identified as Karan Pathak (alias Karan Defaulter), Tarandeep Singh, and Sukhsherpal Singh (alias Akash Uppal) — were produced before a Mohali court, which granted a three-day police remand for further interrogation. With these arrests, police have now apprehended eight suspects in the case, while one accomplice was killed in an earlier encounter with law enforcement.
Authorities said the accused were acting under directions from foreign-based gangsters and were part of a conspiracy allegedly hatched months before the shooting.

Inside the Multi-State Manhunt
The Rana Balachauria murder investigation escalated into a six-state manhunt after the assailants fled Mohali immediately after the attack. Police allege the shooters, including Pathak and an associate identified as Aditya Kapoor (alias Makhan), lured Balachauria under the pretense of taking a selfie at the kabaddi ground, then fired at him at close range before escaping on a motorcycle.
Following the murder, the suspects are believed to have moved stealthily through Panipat, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gangtok, Siliguri, and finally Kolkata, frequently changing vehicles and routes to evade capture. Police teams traced their movements using CCTV footage, mobile phone tracking, digital money trails and coordination with multiple state agencies and the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF).
Punjab Police officers, including AGTF personnel, led the chase alongside counterparts from West Bengal, Mumbai and Sikkim, finally cornering the suspects near Howrah. Central agencies also provided critical technical support to analyse data and surveillance footage.

Roles of the Accused and Logistical Support
Investigators detailed the roles of the arrested men in the conspiracy. Pathak and Kapoor are believed to have carried out the shooting, while Tarandeep Singh allegedly facilitated the escape by waiting on the motorcycle used in the attack. Akashdeep Singh is said to have organised logistics, safe hideouts, transport and communication devices for the shooters.
Earlier in the investigation, other suspects were arrested from various locations, and one key conspirator, Harpinder Singh (alias Middi), was killed in a police encounter in Lalru while aiding the shooters’ escape. Additional accused are still at large, and police have launched raids to apprehend them and recover further evidence.

Police have indicated that the Rana Balachauria murder was linked to rivalries over control of kabaddi tournaments and related economic interests. Balachauria’s expanding influence as a promoter of kabaddi events reportedly created friction with organised crime networks keen to dominate sponsorship, player contracts and event management revenue streams.
According to senior officials, the conspiracy was orchestrated by gang operatives based abroad, and the accused acted on their directives. Investigators are now probing the financial trails, digital communications, and overseas connections to uncover the full extent of the network behind the murder.
