CM Bhagwant Mann Targets Drug Mafia, Vows to Identify Black Sheep in Law Enforcement
Chandigarh, June 3, 2025 — In a renewed and stern message against the drug trade in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the drug menace from the state. Declaring a “zero tolerance” approach, Mann warned that no one involved in the illicit drug network — including corrupt law enforcement officers — would be spared.
Interacting with media at his official residence in Chandigarh, Mann said his administration is adopting stringent measures to dismantle the drug trade, a problem that has plagued Punjab for over two decades. “Unlike previous regimes where even ministers were allegedly involved in drug peddling, our government is committed to identifying and punishing every black sheep, even within the enforcement agencies,” he stated.
Yudh Nasheyan De Virudh Campaign Making Impact
The Chief Minister highlighted the ongoing campaign titled Yudh Nasheyan De Virudh (War Against Drugs), which has led to several villages being declared drug-free. “This fight will not end until the last ounce of drugs is wiped out from our land. We are using every tool available — from surveillance to community support — to ensure a drug-free Punjab,” Mann asserted.
He emphasized that the government would continue this aggressive campaign until Punjab is free from the scourge of addiction. Alongside enforcement, the state is also promoting rehabilitation programs and educational outreach to protect the youth from falling into the trap of addiction.
Political Theatrics Won’t Sway Voters, Says Mann
In a scathing response to the BJP’s recent Operation Sindoor, Mann dismissed it as “mere theatrics” aimed at gaining political mileage. “The BJP is distributing sindoor without logic, hoping to win votes through emotion rather than solutions. But the people of Punjab and India are far too wise to be fooled by such tactics,” he quipped.
Mann underlined that his focus remains on the well-being of all sections of society, including farmers, youth, and the economically disadvantaged — not political stunts. “Seeking votes through symbolic campaigns will not solve real issues like drugs, unemployment, and border underdevelopment,” he added.
Farmer Welfare, Water Crisis Also Top Priorities
Turning to agriculture, CM Mann addressed concerns about the ongoing paddy transplantation season. He assured that the state has made comprehensive arrangements to assist farmers and minimize hardship. “While some unions are focused on debates, we are busy working on ground solutions for farmers,” he remarked.
Mann also reiterated Punjab’s stand on water sharing, stating emphatically that the state cannot spare a single drop for others. “With nearly all blocks overexploited and river resources drying up, Punjab needs more water to sustain its irrigation and farming needs,” he said. He called for every water-sharing agreement to be reviewed every 25 years, reflecting changing ecological and demographic conditions.
Demand for BBMB Reconstitution and Border Development
The Chief Minister once again pressed the Centre to reconstitute the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to reflect Punjab’s rightful share. “Over 3,000 posts reserved for Punjab remain unfilled deliberately, weakening our position. We will push to have these vacancies filled to ensure justice,” he declared.
He also appealed to the Central Government to invest in colleges and industries in Punjab’s border districts, saying such development is crucial for the state’s socio-economic upliftment. “During the last NITI Aayog meeting, I flagged the concerns of farmers with land between the International Border and fencing. These people face unique challenges that must be addressed.”
