Amritsar: The Amritsar Police has busted an illegal arms smuggling network with the arrest of three accused and the recovery of seven sophisticated pistols, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Resham Singh alias Ghulla (30) of Daleri village in Tarn Taran, Sumit alias Sachin (28) of Gumanpura in Amritsar, and Vishal Kumar (22) of Bhikhiwind in Tarn Taran. Police recovered three 9mm Glock pistols, one 9mm Beretta (Italy), one 9mm Zigana (Turkey), one 9mm PX5 Glock (Turkey) and one .30 bore pistol from their possession.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were in direct contact with Pakistan-based arms smugglers through social media platforms. The illegal weapons were allegedly sent across the border using drones, following which the accused were instructed to deliver the consignments to designated recipients.
He said further investigation is underway to trace both the backward and forward linkages of the smuggling network.
Providing operational details, Commissioner of Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that acting on specific and credible intelligence, police teams launched a well-planned operation during which Resham Singh alias Ghulla was first apprehended. Two 9mm Glock pistols were recovered from him, while three more pistols were seized from a location identified by him in his disclosure statement.
The CP said that during interrogation, Resham revealed the involvement of his associate Sumit alias Sachin, who was subsequently arrested and found in possession of two pistols. Based on further leads, Vishal Kumar was arrested later the same evening, he added.
