Delhi Pollution Crisis: AAP Says LG Saxena Targeting Kejriwal for Media Attention

AAP fires back at LG Saxena over his letter to Arvind Kejriwal, calling it political theater and urging focus on Delhi’s worsening air pollution.

In response to Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena’s letter to party convenor and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retaliated , accusing Saxena of engaging in political theater rather than tackling the nation’s capital’s deteriorating air pollution.

In a three-page response to the LG, Sanjeev Jha, the AAP’s Delhi Chief Whip, claimed that Saxena was involved in politics despite having a constitutional position. “Political and public attention are not the purpose of a constitutional office such as the Lieutenant Governor. Jha stated that if one wishes to engage in politics, they should resign from their position because Delhi requires unbiased governance and responsibility, not platitudes.

Saxena had written to Kejriwal, blaming his government for the present air pollution catastrophe and accused him of “gross indifference” and “criminal inaction.” The AAP responded to the letter by claiming that the action was a conscious attempt to deflect criticism of the current Delhi government, which is headed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

The party claimed that rather than criticizing the current administration, the LG decided to write to a former chief minister despite the city’s extreme pollution levels. The practice, which it called “letter nautanki,” was not intended to address the issue but rather to remain current in media conversation.

The national media head for the AAP According to Anurag Dhanda, the LG had not fulfilled his constitutional duties and seemed disengaged from the seriousness of Delhi’s pollution problem. Following what he called the “four-engine government’s” inability to manage pollution, he accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using diversionary methods.

Dhanda questioned why the BJP-led Delhi government was not being held accountable for the many modifications to pollution control measures, such as the repeated implementation and removal of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) limits.

Additionally, the AAP claimed that although the LG had previously questioned government programs on a daily basis, he had said nothing about the present dispensation’s performance over the previous ten months. The party said that the emphasis was being moved to the past rather than the current governance.

The Kejriwal-led party reiterated previous accusations that the LG had previously acted against environmental interests, citing the cutting of 1,648 trees in an eco-sensitive zone close to Chhatarpur—a matter that is currently before the Supreme Court. This undermined the LG’s moral authority to raise concerns about pollution and environmental preservation, according to the AAP.

The AAP appealed to the public and media to look past what it described as political digressions, claiming that the deteriorating air quality in Delhi and the purported inability of the BJP government in the capital to adequately address it continue to be the true problem.
