Sangam Kumar Sahu will become the 47th Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. He was sworn in on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Governor Arif Mohammad Khan administered the oath of office and secrecy to him during the swearing-in event at Bihar Lok Bhavan. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was also present at the event.
The procedure started last month.
Sangam Kumar Sahu assumed responsibilities upon the retirement of former Chief Justice P B Bajanthari. The process of nominating Justice Sangam Kumar Sahu started last month. The Supreme Court collegium recommended Justice Sangam Kumar Sahu (for the Patna High Court) to the central government. He also took the oath today (Wednesday). Justice Sudhir Singh is now acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

Who is Sangam Kumar Sahu?
Sangam Kumar Sahu was born on June 5, 1964. He attended Cuttack High School until matriculation. Stewart Science College awarded him a BSc. He graduated from Utkal University (Bhuvaneshwar) with an MA in Odia.

On November 26, 1989, Sangam Kumar Sahu enrolled as a lawyer with the Odisha State Bar Council after earning a law degree from the Law College in Cuttack. On July 2, 2014, he was appointed judge of the Odisha High Court.
