Deadly Lightning Strikes and Hailstorms in Bihar Claim 61 Lives, Triggering Statewide Alarm

Patna, April 11 – Bihar has been rocked by severe weather over the past 48 hours, as heavy rain, powerful lightning strikes, and hailstorms have claimed the lives of at least 61 individuals across multiple districts. The devastating toll was confirmed by the state’s Disaster Management Department on Friday, April 11, following the turbulent weather on Thursday.

Among the dead, 39 people were reported to have died due to direct rain-related incidents and hailstorm-related injuries, while 22 others were killed by lightning strikes, making it one of the deadliest weather-related tragedies in the state this year.

Nalanda District Bears the Brunt

Nalanda district emerged as the hardest hit, reporting 23 fatalities, followed by Bhojpur with six deaths. Other districts impacted include:

  • Siwan, Gaya, Patna, Sheikhpura – 4 deaths each
  • Jamui – 3 deaths
  • Jehanabad – 2 deaths
  • Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Arwal, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Saharsa, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Nawada, Bhagalpur – 1 death each

Local authorities reported widespread damage to houses and infrastructure caused by high-velocity winds and intense lightning. Rescue and relief efforts have been mobilized across the state, with officials working around the clock to assess the damage and provide immediate support.

State Government Responds with Compensation

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and announced ex gratia compensation of ₹4 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased person. “We are taking all necessary steps to assist the affected families and ensure they receive timely support,” the Chief Minister stated in an official release.

This recent calamity underscores the state’s vulnerability to extreme weather patterns, a problem that has been escalating in recent years due to climate change and irregular monsoonal behavior.

Rising Trend in Lightning Deaths in Bihar

According to the Bihar Economic Survey 2024–25, lightning and thunderstorm-related incidents killed 275 people in 2023. Districts such as Rohtas (25 deaths), Gaya (21), Aurangabad (19), Jamui (17), Madhepura and Bhagalpur (16 each) ranked among the most affected.

These figures reveal a troubling trend of increasing fatalities due to lightning, with experts calling for better early warning systems and public awareness campaigns, especially in rural regions where people are more vulnerable.

IMD Issues Fresh Alerts: Orange Alert for Bihar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several parts of Bihar, warning of continued thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.

Forecast Highlights:

  • Thursday: Thunderstorms and winds at 40–50 km/h expected in Kishanganj, Araria, and Purnea.
  • Saturday (April 12): Storms expected over Katihar, Supaul, and Southeast Bihar.
  • April 13–14: Intermittent storms forecast across Central and Eastern Bihar, including South-Central and North-Central regions.
  • April 15: Isolated thunderstorms in South-Western Bihar.

Citizens have been urged to stay indoors during severe weather, avoid open fields, and seek shelter during lightning activity. The Disaster Management Department has activated emergency hotlines and is coordinating with local administration for continued preparedness.

Expert Insight: Urgent Need for Lightning Safety Awareness

Meteorologists and disaster experts stress the importance of early-warning dissemination and lightning-safe infrastructure, particularly in agrarian states like Bihar. The lack of awareness and inadequate shelter often result in higher casualties during lightning strikes.

“Lightning is a predictable hazard. With the right technology and community engagement, most of these deaths can be prevented,” said an IMD official on Friday.
