Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Retirement: Will They Come Back?

In what could become one of the most heartfelt appeals in Indian cricket history, former India cricketer Yograj Singh has urged Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to reconsider their decision to retire from Test cricket. The duo’s sudden exit from red-ball cricket has left fans stunned and the national team short on experience, especially ahead of the upcoming five-match Test series against England starting June 20.

Yograj Singh, a former fast bowler and the father of Yuvraj Singh, called on the two batting giants to think beyond themselves and reflect on what their absence would mean for the country’s Test future.

“This is not the time to think about themselves — it’s about the nation, the fans, and the deep emotions people have for the game,” Yograj said in a heartfelt statement.

He went further, adding that Kohli still has “at least 10 years of cricket left,” and offered to personally help Rohit return to peak fitness should he choose to come back. His message wasn’t just directed at the players, but also the BCCI, which he said must do more to support senior players in their difficult phases.

“The BCCI must act like a parent — protect and support their players, not let ego or politics dictate decisions,” he said.

Yograj didn’t shy away from recalling past instances where he believed the board failed players like Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Virender Sehwag, claiming they were dropped without clarity or support.

He also revealed that he has asked Yuvraj Singh to reach out to Virat Kohli directly and convince him to return.

“I told Yuvi to call Virat and say, ‘Don’t make the same mistake I did.’ One day, when the frustration comes, it’ll be too late to undo this,” he warned.

Legacy at Stake

Virat Kohli leaves behind a staggering Test career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches, including 30 centuries. Rohit Sharma, who transformed himself into a formidable Test opener, ends his red-ball career with 4,301 runs in 67 Tests, with 12 centuries to his name.

Both retirements were announced shortly after the conclusion of the home Test season, signaling a generational shift in Indian cricket. But the sudden nature of their exits — with little warning or farewell — has left fans and former cricketers alike questioning the timing.

A Nation Still Hopes

As the England tour looms, India’s Test side looks to rebuild. Yet Yograj Singh’s passionate message may just strike a chord loud enough to inspire a comeback — even if temporary. He believes both men still have a mission unfulfilled.

“This isn’t just about cricket — it’s about legacy, about giving fans one last chapter to cherish,” he said.

Whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will answer the call is unknown. But one thing is certain: India isn’t ready to say goodbye just yet
