Hardik Pandya MI Captaincy Under Debate as Ashwin Suggests Surya Yadav

Ravichandran Ashwin suggests Suryakumar Yadav could take over Hardik Pandya’s MI captaincy, while backing Pandya’s leadership skills as well.

The Hardik Pandya MI captaincy has become a topic of discussion once again, following comments by veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Pandya took over the captaincy of Mumbai Indians (MI) a couple of seasons ago, replacing Rohit Sharma—a move that sparked debate among fans and experts alike. While Pandya guided the team to the playoffs last season, Ashwin believes the franchise should consider handing the reins to another senior player.

Ashwin Backs Suryakumar Yadav as MI Captain

Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin suggested that Suryakumar Yadav is the natural choice for MI’s leadership. “Suryakumar Yadav being the captain of the Mumbai Indians is a no-brainer. Usko captaincy dena hi chahiye (He should definitely be the captain). And the fact that it isn’t happening, I’m sure, is a bit of a concern,” Ashwin said.

Suryakumar Yadav recently led India to a T20 World Cup 2026 title, losing only one match throughout the tournament. He remains unbeaten as captain in any T20 bilaterals or tournaments with the Men in Blue, making him a strong candidate for MI’s captaincy.

Hardik Pandya MI Captaincy Credentials Supported

Despite suggesting Surya as a potential replacement, Ashwin also backed Hardik Pandya MI captaincy credentials. “We should also look at Hardik’s captaincy credentials. Hardik Pandya, as the Gujarat Titans captain, won a title in his first season, and the team was the runner-up in the second. When he came to Mumbai, the expectation was that he would be the captain and continue that trend,” Ashwin added.

He further emphasized that external issues, like the Rohit Sharma transition, affected Pandya’s first year, but under normal circumstances, Hardik Pandya MI captaincy can still succeed. “Leaving external issues aside, without any pressure and with the support of the players and management, I still think Hardik can do a fine job. He needs to use this squad that he has in the right way,” Ashwin concluded.

MI’s Upcoming IPL 2026 Campaign

The Hardik Pandya MI captaincy will soon be tested as Mumbai Indians begin their IPL 2026 season against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at home in the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, March 29. Fans will be keenly watching to see how Pandya leads his star-studded squad and whether any changes in leadership occur.
