His closest opponent for the seat, according to the vote totals, was Surinder Kaur of the Congress party. With more than twenty thousand votes, Bhagat was ahead in Punjab by-election

In the Punjab by-election, which was held in Punjab’s Jalandhar West constituency, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Mohinder Bhagat was leading; the results would be made public on Saturday, July 13.

His closest opponent for the seat, according to the vote totals, was Sheetal Angural of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Mohinder Bhagat had more than 27,000 votes and was in the lead.

Sheetal Angural, an AAP member from Jalandhar West, a scheduled caste reserved constituency, tendered his resignation on March 28, one day after he joined the BJP.

He had contacted Speaker Kultar Singh of the Punjab legislature on June 3 to request permission to rescind his resignation; however, the letter was denied, forcing the bypolls.

Following his departure from the BJP in the previous year, Mohinder Bhagat was fielded by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He is the son of Chunni Lal Bhagat, a seasoned BJP leader and former cabinet minister. He unsuccessfully sought the same seat in the 2022 assembly elections as a BJP candidate.

On a BJP ticket, Mohinder Bhagat has run twice from Jalandhar West. From 2007 until 2011, he presided over Punjab’s Medium Industries Development Board as its chairman. In addition, he was the vice president of the BJP for Punjab from 1998 to 2001 and again from 2017 to 2020.

There are 117 members in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, of which 90 are from the ruling AAP party. The opposition Congress has 13 seats, SAD has 3, BJP has 2, BSP has 1, and independent candidates have 3.

Earlier in 2022, Sheetal Angural had won on the AAP ticket with the margin of 4,253 votes from then Congress nominee Sushil Kumar Rinku. Mohinder Bhagat polled 33,486 votes, while Angural got 39,213 votes.

Anil Meena, the candidate for the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party, received just 4,125 votes, while Rinku received 34,960.

The nomination period began on June 14 and ended on June 21, with the election for the position taking place on July 10.
