Punjab’s Livestock Census to Be Completed by February 2025, Immunisation Drive Against LSD to Begin Soon

Chandigarh, February 5: Punjab Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian has directed officials to complete the ongoing 21st livestock census by the end of February 2025. The census aims to gather vital data on the state’s livestock, which will play a crucial role in future planning and decision-making within the animal husbandry sector.

Khudian made the announcement during a meeting held at the Livestock Complex in Sector-68, SAS Nagar (Mohali), alongside Dr. Sukhpal Singh, Chairman of the Punjab State Farmers’ & Farm Workers’ Commission. The purpose of the meeting was to review ongoing livestock-related projects and ensure the timely completion of critical initiatives.

Importance of Accurate Livestock Data for Future Planning

Khudian emphasized that accurate and comprehensive data collection is essential for understanding the current status of the livestock sector in Punjab. The 21st livestock census will categorize animals by breed and other distinguishing characteristics. This census is vital for several reasons: it will serve as a benchmark for policy planning, support sustainable practices in the sector, and help the government make informed decisions for the welfare of farmers and the agricultural community.

“This extensive field survey will not only reflect the present status of our livestock but will also serve as a foundation for future policies and initiatives aimed at improving the sector,” Khudian said. The data collected will aid in identifying trends, challenges, and opportunities, which can then be addressed through effective governance and strategic planning.

Mass Immunisation Drive Against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD)

In addition to the livestock census, Khudian announced the launch of a statewide mass immunisation drive against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in the coming week. The disease, which has affected livestock in various regions, has raised concerns due to its impact on cattle health and farmers’ livelihoods. To prevent further spread, the Punjab government has procured sufficient doses of the Goat Pox vaccine, which will be used to immunise approximately 25 lakh cattle across the state.

“The state government is fully committed to preventing the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease, and we have procured adequate vaccine doses to cover all cattle. This initiative will help protect our livestock and ensure that our farmers do not face significant economic losses due to this disease,” Khudian said.

Strategic Measures to Safeguard Livestock Health

The mass immunisation drive will target cattle in all regions of Punjab, with a focus on high-risk areas where LSD cases have been reported. The Department of Animal Husbandry, under the guidance of Khudian, is expected to roll out the vaccination campaign in a phased manner, ensuring that all 25 lakh cattle are immunized within the stipulated timeframe.

Lumpy Skin Disease, which primarily affects cattle, is known to cause fever, skin lesions, and, in severe cases, death. The disease can also reduce milk production and overall cattle productivity, making it a major concern for farmers. Vaccination is considered the most effective way to control the spread of LSD and prevent further economic losses for Punjab’s farming community.

Collaboration Between Government Bodies and Animal Husbandry Officials

During the meeting, Khudian and Dr. Sukhpal Singh met with officials from the Department of Animal Husbandry to discuss the progress of various ongoing initiatives. These initiatives aim to enhance the overall health and productivity of the livestock sector, which is integral to Punjab’s agricultural economy.

The state’s efforts to improve livestock health are a part of the broader vision of strengthening the agriculture sector, ensuring sustainable farming practices, and enhancing food security. By implementing targeted health campaigns such as the LSD immunisation drive, the government aims to improve the resilience of Punjab’s livestock industry against emerging diseases.

Punjab’s Commitment to Agricultural Growth and Animal Welfare

The 21st livestock census and the LSD immunisation drive are key components of Punjab’s ongoing efforts to bolster its agricultural framework. Khudian reiterated the importance of data-driven policymaking and expressed confidence that these initiatives would lead to a stronger, more sustainable livestock sector.

“The success of this campaign and the completion of the livestock census will provide a comprehensive view of the state’s livestock health and contribute to long-term planning that benefits both farmers and the entire agricultural community,” he added.

Conclusion: Building a Sustainable Future for Punjab’s Livestock Sector

As the 21st livestock census progresses and the immunisation drive against LSD is rolled out, the Punjab government is taking significant steps toward safeguarding its livestock population and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector. With accurate data and effective health interventions, Punjab aims to create a healthier and more resilient agricultural ecosystem that supports both farmers and consumers.
