Punjab continues its push for educational reform by sending the second batch of 72 primary school teachers to Finland for an advanced training program. This initiative, announced by the state’s School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, aims to improve the quality of primary education in the state by exposing educators to global best practices. The program will take place in March and is a part of a broader collaboration between Punjab and Finland’s University of Turku.

Collaboration with Finland to Elevate Education Standards

On January 22, 2025, during his visit to the School of Eminence in SAS Nagar (Mohali), Minister Harjot Singh Bains revealed the details of the upcoming training program. Accompanied by experts from the University of Turku, including Mr. Ari Kioski, Mr. Joel, Ms. Mirjami Einola, and Ms. Sari Isokytö-Sinjoi, the minister highlighted the significant role that Finland’s educational model will play in shaping the future of primary education in Punjab.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Punjab Government and the University of Turku, marking the beginning of this collaboration. The three-week training program is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience, consisting of one week of training in Punjab, followed by two weeks in Finland. This unique exchange will help teachers absorb new teaching methodologies that align with global educational standards.

The Purpose of the Training Program

National Awardee Art & Craft Teacher Gurpreet Singh Namdhari demonstrated his creative skills by guiding the guests in a live painting of the Finnish flag, outlining it with the map of Finland. The Finnish experts were particularly impressed by the students’ art & craft skills, showcasing the school’s dedication to holistic education beyond academics.

The Education Minister also took the opportunity to present the Finnish delegation with paintings made by the students, further symbolizing the spirit of cultural exchange between Punjab and Finland. This gesture highlighted the importance of arts and crafts in fostering creativity and innovation in education.
