Punjab Government Cracks Down on Drug Smugglers with Major Demolition Actions
Punjab Government Intensifies ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’ Campaign with Major Demolition Operations
Chandigarh/SBS Nagar/Sunam Udham Singh Wala/Sangrur, March 11, 2025 — The Punjab government’s ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’ campaign, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is gathering momentum in the fight against drug trafficking. In recent developments, the government has ramped up its efforts with targeted demolition actions aimed at eradicating drug smuggling operations. In a significant show of force, illegal structures linked to drug traffickers were demolished in Nawanshahr and Sunam Udham Singh Wala on March 11.
These operations, carried out by Punjab Police in collaboration with local civil administrations, are seen as vital steps in the government’s broader effort to rid the state of the drug menace and provide much-needed relief to the public.
Crackdown in Nawanshahr: Illegal Structures of Drug-Peddlers Demolished
The first significant demolition operation took place in Nawanshahr, specifically in the Kalaran Mohalla area. The Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Police, working in tandem with the local Municipal Council, demolished illegal constructions that had been linked to drug-trafficking families. SSP Dr. Mehtab Singh confirmed that the demolitions targeted properties associated with three families — Biro, Shindo, and Santosh — who are facing multiple drug-related charges.
One of these families alone has 14 registered cases related to drug trafficking, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. Dr. Mehtab Singh stated that the demolition was carried out at the request of the local Municipal Council, which needed police support to clear the area of illegal encroachments. The local community had long expressed concerns about the activities of these drug smugglers, and the recent demolition has been welcomed by residents who have long suffered from the smuggling networks operating in their neighborhoods.
“Residents in Kalaran Mohalla have been enduring constant disturbances due to the presence of these drug peddlers. The demolition is a positive step in our fight against drugs, and the community is relieved to see action being taken,” Dr. Mehtab Singh said.
Simultaneous Demolition in Sunam Udham Singh Wala
Meanwhile, another key operation unfolded in Sunam Udham Singh Wala, where the SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal, alongside district police and administrative teams, demolished an illegal structure connected to Budh Singh, a notorious drug-peddler known locally as Budhu. This structure, located near the Anaj Mandi, had been occupied by Budh Singh, who had illegally set up both a residence and a shop, reportedly linked to his drug smuggling activities.
SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal confirmed that the demolished property had been used as a base for illegal operations, and that Budh Singh was facing multiple charges under the NDPS Act (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) and the Excise Act. The operation targeted the Market Committee Sunam-owned land, which had been unlawfully occupied by the drug trafficker.
“Budh Singh’s operations have been a constant source of trouble for the local community. This demolition is just the beginning, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to dismantle drug networks in the region,” Chahal said.
Warnings to Drug Smugglers: Strict Action Ahead
Both police officers, Dr. Mehtab Singh and Sartaj Singh Chahal, issued a strong warning to drug smugglers operating in their jurisdictions. They emphasized that smugglers have two choices: either voluntarily abandon their illegal activities or face serious legal consequences. The police also urged the public to report any drug-related activities, assuring that such tips would be met with swift action.
In light of the ongoing operations, local residents have expressed overwhelming support for the Punjab government’s intensified actions. Many have praised Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for his government’s decisive stance on tackling the state’s drug problem.
“We fully support the government’s initiative to eliminate drug trafficking. These actions bring hope to the people of Punjab that one day, the state will be free of drugs,” a local resident from Nawanshahr commented.
A Step Toward a Drug-Free Punjab
The ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’ campaign, which means “War Against Drugs”, has been a key initiative of the Punjab government in its drive to make the state free from the scourge of drug trafficking. The demolition operations in Nawanshahr and Sunam Udham Singh Wala represent a significant escalation in the government’s anti-drug efforts, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a series of operations aimed at eliminating the infrastructure that supports drug trade.
Both police officials and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann have reiterated their commitment to creating a drug-free Punjab. In addition to demolitions, the government has also pledged to enhance law enforcement and public awareness campaigns to eradicate the menace at its roots.
“We are committed to dismantling the entire network of drug trafficking in Punjab. This is just the first of many operations that will follow,” Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann assured the public.
Public Relief and Future Crackdowns
The public has shown strong backing for the government’s actions, feeling relieved by the recent operations. Residents are hopeful that such sustained measures will eventually rid the state of the influence of drug-peddlers.
Both SSP Dr. Mehtab Singh and SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal confirmed that similar operations would continue across Punjab, focusing on drug smuggling networks and illegal encroachments. These actions are seen as a crucial part of Punjab’s larger mission to rid the state of illegal drugs and restore safety to its communities.
Conclusion: Moving Towards a Safer Punjab
As the ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’ campaign continues to gain traction, the Punjab government is determined to dismantle the infrastructure that enables drug smuggling. These recent demolitions serve as a clear indication that the government will not back down in its fight against drug trafficking.
The coordinated actions in Nawanshahr and Sunam Udham Singh Wala are a clear signal to all drug smugglers in Punjab: either leave or face the full force of the law. With community support and unwavering governmental resolve, Punjab is on the path to becoming drug-free.
