Punjab Appoints 230 Booth Level Agents to Strengthen Electoral Transparency

Chandigarh, April 24, 2025: In a significant move to bolster the integrity of the upcoming elections, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Punjab, has announced the appointment of 230 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) across the state. This initiative aims to enhance transparency, ensure accurate voter rolls, and facilitate a fair electoral process.

Understanding the Role of Booth Level Agents

Booth-level agents serve as vital links between political parties and the electoral machinery at the grassroots level. Their primary responsibilities include

  • Verification of Electoral Rolls: Ensuring the accuracy of voter lists by identifying discrepancies and facilitating corrections.
  • Assisting Voter Registration: Guiding eligible citizens in filing applications for inclusion, removal, modification, and transfer in the electoral roll.
  • Monitoring Polling Stations: Overseeing the conduct of elections at the booth level to ensure fairness and transparency.

Each booth-level agent is appointed at the district level by recognized political parties through their authorized representatives. These agents work closely with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to support voter awareness campaigns and strengthen roll purification efforts.

CEO Sibin C’s Appeal to Political Parties

Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C has urged all recognized political parties to expedite the appointment of Booth Level Agents. In a statement, he emphasized,

“The active participation of Booth Level Agents is crucial for ensuring the integrity of the electoral rolls and the overall fairness of the election process. A well-informed and present BLA strengthens the very foundation of democracy.”

He further highlighted that the timely appointment of BLAs will facilitate seamless collaboration with Booth Level Officers, support voter awareness initiatives, and enhance the overall efficiency of the electoral process.

Mandatory Appointment Process

The appointment of Booth Level Agents is mandatory for every recognized political party. Each party is required to authorize one district representative to appoint Booth Level Agents at the district level. These authorized representatives are responsible for ensuring that BLAs are appointed for each polling station within their jurisdiction.

Additionally, each Booth Level Agent is tasked with appointing a Booth Level Agent-2 (BLA-2) at the booth level, further enhancing grassroots-level oversight and coordination.

Collaborative Efforts for Electoral Preparedness

The CEO’s office is working in close coordination with all recognized political parties to ensure the full and timely appointment of Booth Level Agents. This collaborative effort aims to facilitate the efficient preparation and revision of electoral rolls, thereby ensuring a transparent and credible election process.

Conclusion

The appointment of 230 Booth Level Agents marks a significant step towards ensuring transparency and preparedness for the upcoming elections in Punjab. By strengthening the electoral process at the grassroots level, this initiative reaffirms the state’s commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and electoral integrity.
