Patiala, December 4 – The Patiala district administration, in a landmark initiative, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) today with Punjabi University, aimed at offering undergraduate courses, including BA Humanities, to students in the disability category. The MOU signing event held at Vani School for hearing impaired, graced by Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh and Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, marks a significant step towards inclusive education for individuals with disabilities.

“This historic collaboration recognizes the untapped potential within differently-abled students,” stated Dr. Balbir Singh, emphasizing the remarkable talents possessed by individuals with special needs. He highlighted the inspiration drawn from these students as a testament to Punjab’s vision for a vibrant and inclusive society, championed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Echoing this sentiment, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains affirmed the Punjab government’s commitment to establish a specialized center for the higher education of children with special needs. “Despite adversities, these children radiate happiness, teaching us invaluable lessons,” remarked Minister Bains, emphasizing the need to learn from their resilience and joy.

The MOU facilitates access to undergraduate courses at Punjabi University for students encompassing nine types of disabilities among the 21 recognized categories. Vice Chancellor Prof. Arvind and Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney hailed the collaboration, noting Vani School’s pivotal role as a resource center for students with disabilities seeking higher education at Punjabi University.

The event witnessed the presence of key dignitaries, including Dr. Kiran Kumari from the Center for Improvement of Persons with Disabilities, SDM Dr. Ismat Vijay Singh, Vani School Principal Sukhchain Virk, along with enthusiastic students and their parents. The celebration further flourished with a cultural program presented by the special students of Vani School.
