At the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto delivered a speech that stood out for its universal message of peace. Representing the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, Prabowo concluded his address with the Sanskrit mantra “Om Shanti, Shanti Om”—a call for peace that transcends cultures and religions.

A Message of Unity at the UNGA
During his speech, Prabowo highlighted the urgent need for global unity in addressing conflicts, especially the Gaza-Israel crisis. He reminded the world that peace is not merely a dream but a shared responsibility.
“This is a beautiful dream that we must work towards together. We must complete the journey of peace begun by our ancestors,” he said.
Prabowo’s choice of closing words carried symbolic weight. After delivering greetings from multiple faiths—Islamic, Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist—he underlined that the path to peace must include people of all religions. His speech ended with:
“Wasalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, Shalom, Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om, Namo Buddhaya. Thank you very much. May God bless us all, may peace be upon us.”
Indonesia’s Peacekeeping Role
Indonesia has long championed peace on the global stage. Despite not having diplomatic ties with Israel, it remains one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping forces.
Prabowo stressed that Indonesia’s commitment goes beyond words. “We will work for peace not just through speeches, but through our presence on the ground,” he said, reinforcing the nation’s active role in conflict resolution and humanitarian missions.
This position also reflects Indonesia’s broader foreign policy stance—supporting the Palestinian cause while promoting dialogue to reduce regional tensions.
Bridging Cultures Through Faith and Action
The Indonesian leader’s invocation of Om Shanti at an international forum surprised many, but it also resonated as a powerful gesture of inclusivity. By merging greetings from different faith traditions, Prabowo symbolically built a bridge between cultures.
Analysts say this approach highlights Indonesia’s strength as a pluralistic society. With a diverse population of Muslims, Christians, Hindus, and Buddhists, the country embodies religious coexistence and projects that model on the world stage.
Peace as a Shared Responsibility
Prabowo reminded the assembly that peace cannot be left to governments alone—it requires collective participation. He urged world leaders and citizens to recognize their role in shaping a safer future.
“Moving towards peace is possible not just through words, but through active participation and commitment,” he said.
By framing peace as a universal duty, the Indonesian President sought to inspire cooperation among nations divided by conflict. His remarks reflected a broader vision of diplomacy grounded in humanity, compassion, and respect for all faiths
