Beautiful Delhi December Morning

Delhi Witnesses Season’s Coldest Morning

NEW DELHI : Delhi residents woke up to bone-chilling temperatures on Wednesday, as the mercury plunged to 4.8°C, marking the coldest morning of the season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the minimum temperature may dip further to 4°C by Thursday, intensifying the cold wave in the national capital and surrounding areas.

Cold Wave Engulfs North India

The cold wave isn’t confined to Delhi. States like Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are also reeling under severe winter conditions. Fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday added to the icy winds blowing southward, further lowering temperatures across North India.

According to the IMD, this is the first time in 14 years that early December temperatures in Delhi have dropped below 5°C. The last such occurrence was recorded on December 6, 1987, when the mercury touched 4.1°C.

Weather Advisory for Delhi

The Regional Meteorological Center in Delhi has forecast a “mainly clear sky with cold wave conditions at isolated places” for Thursday. Residents can expect smog or mist in the morning and evening hours, making visibility a concern for commuters.

Here are the specific weather details for December 12, as per the IMD:

  • Morning: Predominantly northwest surface winds at a speed of less than 8 km/h, with smog or mist.
  • Afternoon: Wind speeds to increase to about 16 km/h, providing brief relief from stagnant air.
  • Evening/Night: Winds to slow again to less than 8 km/h, with smog or mist returning.

The IMD has also cautioned against prolonged exposure to cold air, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

Delhi’s Cold Wave: Historical Context

This year’s cold wave has drawn comparisons with some of Delhi’s harshest winters. Data shows that while the city occasionally experiences temperatures below 5°C in December, such a prolonged cold spell this early in the month is rare. Meteorologists attribute this to a combination of factors, including:

  • Cold winds from snow-clad northern regions
  • Clear skies allowing heat to escape during the night
  • Stagnant wind patterns contributing to temperature drops

Smog and Visibility Challenges

The combination of cold temperatures and smog has worsened air quality in Delhi and surrounding regions. Morning visibility remains low, and the dense mist mixed with pollutants poses risks for road safety and health. Commuters are advised to drive cautiously and use fog lights during early hours.

Coping with the Cold: Health and Safety Tips

  • Layer Up: Wear multiple layers of clothing to retain body heat.
  • Stay Indoors: Limit outdoor activities during the early morning and late evening.
  • Use Humidifiers: Dry air can aggravate respiratory issues; humidifiers help maintain air moisture indoors.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink warm fluids like herbal tea and soups to keep your body warm and hydrated.

What Lies Ahead

With colder days predicted, Delhi residents should brace for more intense winter conditions. The IMD’s extended forecast suggests that the cold wave may persist, accompanied by misty mornings and hazy evenings. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 23°C during the day, offering some respite.
