Monsoon to Hit Delhi on June 24: IMD Forecast Brings Relief from Scorching Heat
New Delhi, June 21 – In a much-anticipated update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that favourable conditions are developing for the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Delhi on June 24, offering a much-needed reprieve from the intense heatwave gripping the capital and its neighbouring states.
The forecast extends to parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, where monsoon rains are expected over the next four days.
IMD Predicts Widespread Monsoon Progress
According to the IMD’s latest weather bulletin, the monsoon is advancing across the remaining areas of North Arabian Sea, as well as the rest of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, over the coming 48 hours.
“Conditions continue to remain favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon into more parts of northwest India, including Delhi, by June 24,” the IMD stated.
This development is expected to bring widespread rainfall, reduce daytime temperatures, and finally signal an end to the prolonged heatwave conditions.
Delhi’s Heatwave Crisis: A Timeline
Delhi has been reeling under a relentless heatwave for over two weeks, with temperatures consistently breaching the 45°C mark. The city recently recorded its highest-ever June temperature of 49.9°C, sparking health alerts and water shortages in several districts.
Hospitals have reported a spike in heat-related illnesses, while schools were temporarily shut or adjusted timings to protect students. The arrival of monsoon rains is now being seen as a critical intervention for public health, agriculture, and water resources.
What This Means for Other Northern States
The IMD’s forecast also brings hope for Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Jammu & Kashmir, which have been similarly affected by rising temperatures. As the monsoon trough shifts northward, these regions will start experiencing pre-monsoon showers, followed by sustained monsoon activity.
Farmers in Punjab and Haryana, currently preparing for the kharif crop season, are likely to benefit significantly from the timely onset of rainfall.
Monsoon 2025: Slight Delay, But on Track
While the normal onset date for the monsoon in Delhi is June 27, the forecasted arrival on June 24 is slightly ahead of schedule, compared to previous years when the rains were delayed due to climatic anomalies.
IMD officials have clarified that while climate change continues to influence seasonal patterns, this year’s monsoon progression is largely on track and within normal variation.
