Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award: Honoring Indian Sports Achievement
Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award was originally given to recognize a sports person’s performance in a given 4 year. It was established in 1991–1992. The highest athletic honor in India is the Khel Ratna Award, also known as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award or the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. The Government of India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports bestows it once a year. India’s greatest athletic award, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, is presented for outstanding achievement in international competitions and sports. Although unusual exploits are also taken into consideration, the prize honors athletes who have shown exceptional achievement during the previous four years. A medallion, a certificate, and a ₹25 lakh (as of 2023) cash prize are all included. A committee of experts, which includes former athletes and sports authorities, makes suggestions during the selection process. A committee consisting of twelve members assesses athletes’ performances at international competitions such as the Olympic, Paralympic, Asian, and Commonwealth Games. The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports then receives the committee’s recommendations for additional approval. The prize was named for India’s sixth prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi (1944–1991), from 1991 until 2021. The Indian government changed the name of the prize on August 6, 2021, in honor of Major Dhyan Chand (1905–1979), an Indian field hockey player who scored over 1000 goals throughout his 20-year career from 1926 to 1948 and is considered to be among the best in history. When he announced the award’s renaming, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was doing it in response to “many requests from citizens across India.”
Grandmaster of chess Viswanathan Anand was the first to get the award, and he was recognized for his 1991–1992 performance. Sport shooter Abhinav Bindra, who was eighteen at the time, was the youngest person to win the award in 2001.
A few exceptions have been made (1993–1994, 2002, 2009, 2012, 2016–2021, and 2024), where more than one athlete received the prize in a single year. Normally, only one athlete receives it annually.
Athletics, badminton, billiards, boxing, chess, cricket, field hockey, football, gymnastics, para-athletics, para-badminton, para-shooting, shooting, snooker, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting, and yacht racing are among the sixteen sport disciplines that have produced 62 recipients as of 2024.
