Maha Shivratri will be observed on 15 February 2026, commemorating the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees celebrate this sacred union of Shiv and Shakti as a symbol of balance, strength, and eternal harmony. Worshipping Mahadev and Maa Gauri on this day is considered highly auspicious and is believed to bring blessings and positive outcomes in life.
Among the rituals performed, jalabhishek holds special importance. Devotees believe that offering water to Lord Shiva with sincerity and purity helps remove obstacles and hardships. Across India, this ritual is observed with deep devotion. However, even small mistakes during the offering can reduce its spiritual benefit, so certain guidelines should be followed carefully.
Important Guidelines for Jalabhishek
1. Avoid Plastic Vessels:
Scriptures recommend using copper or brass vessels for the offering. Plastic or unclean containers are considered inauspicious. Ensure the vessel is clean and pure before performing the ritual.

2. Do Not Offer Tulsi Leaves:
Tulsi is traditionally associated with Lord Vishnu and is not used in Shiv worship. Devotees should avoid placing Tulsi leaves on the Shivling.
3. Refrain From Offering Ketaki Flowers:
Religious customs prohibit offering Ketaki flowers to Lord Shiva. They should not be used during Maha Shivratri or any Shiv puja.
4. Offer Belpatra Properly:
Belpatra (bilva leaves) is highly significant in Shiva worship. The leaves should be fresh, intact, and free from tears or insects. Place them with the smooth side facing upward on the Shivling.
5. Face the Auspicious Direction:
While performing jalabhishek, facing north is considered auspicious. Pour the water gently and steadily rather than all at once.
6. Respect the Sacred Abhishek Water:
The water that flows from the Shivling during the ritual is considered holy. It should never be stepped on or treated disrespectfully.
By following these guidelines, devotees can ensure their Maha Shivratri puja is performed with devotion and full spiritual benefit.
