Gunfire Erupts Outside Kap’s Café According to Surrey Police, the incident occurred around 1:50 a.m. on July 10, when unknown assailants fired multiple rounds at the café’s glass façade. Surveillance footage reportedly shows at least 9 to 10 bullets hitting the establishment. Staff members were present at the time of the attack, but no injuries were reported. The café, which opened earlier this year, is Kapil Sharma’s first international venture into the food and hospitality space. Claim of Responsibility by Banned Khalistani Operative Shortly after the attack, Harjit Singh Laddi, a known Khalistani extremist affiliated with the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), claimed responsibility. In a video circulating on social media, Laddi alleged that the attack was in retaliation for jokes made on The Kapil Sharma Show which he claimed mocked Nihang Sikh traditions and attire. Harjit Singh Laddi is currently on India’s NIA most-wanted list with a ₹10 lakh bounty and is reportedly based in Canada. Kapil Sharma and Team Respond Kapil Sharma’s café team released a statement on Instagram following the attack: “We opened Kap’s Café as a space for love, community, and laughter. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock, but we are not giving up.” Kapil himself broke his silence on July 11 via social media, sharing a video message thanking well-wishers and affirming his commitment to continuing the venture. A Disturbing Pattern and What Lies Ahead This incident adds to a growing pattern of intimidation and violence targeting Indian-origin individuals and businesses abroad, often linked to pro-Khalistani groups. Experts warn such acts reflect escalating extremism and pose serious concerns for diaspora safety. While Kap’s Café remains temporarily closed, Kapil Sharma’s team has vowed to reopen stronger. The Indian government is expected to raise the issue diplomatically, as it may further strain already sensitive India–Canada relations.
