Seoul, May 21, 2026: In a significant gesture highlighting shared wartime history and humanitarian cooperation, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea Mr Kwon Oh-eul jointly inaugurated the Indian War Memorial in Seoul at Imjingak Park on Wednesday. The memorial, built as part of the 75th anniversary commemorations of the Korean War, honours the courage, sacrifice and humanitarian service of Indian personnel during the conflict.
Historic Tribute to 60 Para Field Ambulance and Custodian Force of India in Seoul
The inauguration of the Indian War Memorial in Seoul marks a historic recognition of the role played by the 60 Para Field Ambulance of the Indian Army and the Custodian Force of India (CFI), both of which served in extremely challenging wartime conditions. Leaders from both nations laid wreaths at the site, paying homage to the Indian soldiers whose service continues to be deeply respected in Korea.

Addressing the ceremony, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh emphasized that the Indian War Memorial in Seoul stands as a lasting symbol of India’s commitment to peace, humanitarian assistance and international cooperation. He said the shared sacrifices of India and Korea continue to strengthen the foundation of their Special Strategic Partnership.
Officials noted that the Indian War Memorial in Seoul also reflects growing people-to-people ties and serves as a reminder of the historic goodwill between the two nations. The Defence Minister thanked the government of the Republic of Korea for its cooperation in establishing the memorial and preserving this shared legacy.

The Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea expressed deep gratitude for India’s role during the Korean War, acknowledging that the Indian War Memorial in Seoul appropriately honours the humanitarian contributions of Indian troops, especially the 60 Para Field Ambulance, known as the “Maroon Angels” for their medical service under fire.

A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the two sides to enhance cooperation in honouring war veterans and strengthening historical exchanges. A commemorative memoir was released on the occasion, further documenting the sacrifices recognized through the Indian War Memorial in Seoul.
The ceremony also recalled the leadership of Lt Gen KS Thimayya, under whose chairmanship the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission facilitated the humane handling of prisoners of war. His legacy, along with the role of Indian forces in “Hind Nagar” at Imjingak, forms a key part of the history commemorated by the Indian War Memorial in Seoul.
The event was attended by senior officials, diplomats, veterans, and family members of Indian personnel, including Ms Kalpana Prasad, niece of Lt Col (Dr) AG Rangaraj, MVC. With this inauguration, India concluded a significant diplomatic and commemorative milestone, reinforcing that the Indian War Memorial in Seoul will remain a lasting symbol of shared sacrifice, peace, and enduring friendship between India and the Republic of Korea.
