PM’s Emotional Tribute on National Radio
In the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to Zubeen Garg, calling him the “Kohinoor of Assamese culture.” He noted that while Assam celebrated Bhupen Hazarika’s birth anniversary, the nation was also mourning the passing of a musical legend.
On his official X handle, the PM wrote, “Zubeen Garg was a shining gem of Assam’s cultural heritage. He will always live in the hearts of the people!” He shared a clip of people in Assam listening to Mann Ki Baat in his memory.
In his address, he said,
“Assam is observing Bhupen Hazarika’s birthday today, but a few days ago, a sad incident took place. People mourn the death of Zubeen Garg … deeply attached to Assam’s culture … he will forever remain in our memories.”
He also addressed listeners in Assamese:
“Zubeen was the Kohinoor, the brightest gem of Assamese culture. Though he is physically gone, he will stay in our hearts.”
The Tragic Demise of Zubeen Garg
Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19, 2025, at age 52, following a scuba diving accident in Singapore. Reports indicate he faced breathing difficulties while diving. He was rescued, received CPR, and was rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was declared dead in the ICU around 2:30 pm IST.
Garg’s death shocked fans across India, especially in Assam. The state government announced three days of state mourning, and memorials were planned in Kamarkuchi and Jorhat.
Thousands attended his state-honour funeral in Guwahati, where he was laid to rest with a gun salute.
Meanwhile, the Assam government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances of his death. His family also approached the Assam CID, demanding a transparent investigation.
Legacy and Public Mourning
Zubeen Garg was more than a singer. He was a cultural bridge for Assam and India. He sang in multiple languages, spanning Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and many regional dialects. His Bollywood hit “Ya Ali” brought him nationwide recognition. His Song “Mayabini” became a funeral prayer during his cremation.
Following his death, tributes poured from across the music world. Shaan, Pritam, Papon, and Adil Hussain, among others, expressed shock and sorrow. Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called him one of the state’s “favorite sons.”
Looking Ahead: Investigation and Memory
As the nation mourns, investigations are underway. FIRs have been filed against the event organiser and Zubeen’s manager, suggesting possible negligence. The SIT is recording statements, collecting evidence, and aims to present a clear report.
Meanwhile, permanent memorials are planned in Guwahati and Jorhat, and ashes will be distributed to interested persons and institutions through an online system.
