New Year Turns Tragic as Indian Student in Germany Jumps From Building to Escape Fire

by Desk

Indian student Hruthik Reddy dies in Germany after jumping from a burning building on New Year’s Day; family in Telangana awaits his mortal remains.

Indian Student Hruthik Reddy’s family had been anticipating his return for Sankranti. After his tragic death in a fire mishap in Germany on New Year’s Day, they are now getting ready to receive his mortal remains rather than greeting him at the door.

A house in Berlin catches fire.

A huge fire that started at his Berlin home late on Wednesday night claimed the life of 25-year-old Telangana student Hruthik Reddy. Initial accounts state that the fire quickly spread throughout the apartment, filling it with dense smoke and giving residents little time to respond.

Hruthik is thought to have leaped from the building’s higher story in a last-ditch effort to avoid the flames and asphyxia. There were serious brain injuries from the fall. He was taken to a neighboring hospital by emergency personnel, but despite their best efforts, he passed away from his wounds while being treated. On New Year’s Day, the catastrophe took place, transforming a moment intended for celebration into one of deep grief.

Before Sankranti, a village is in mourning

Back home in the Jangaon district’s Malkapur village, anticipation has given way to grief. Hruthik’s coming for the harvest festival had been anxiously anticipated by family, neighbors, and relatives. He was supposed to return in the middle of January to make up for missing the Dasara festivities earlier in the year.

The joyous mood has now given way to shock and sadness.

A Path Characterized by Loss and Promise

In June 2023, Hruthik relocated to Magdeburg, Germany, to attend the University of Europe and get a Master’s degree. According to News 18, he was resolved to continue his education abroad after completing his engineering studies at Vaagdevi College of Engineering in 2022. Academic obligations prompted him to postpone a trip home during Dasara, with plans firmly set to rejoin with his family during Sankranti.

To find out what caused the fire, German officials have opened an investigation. In the meantime, Hruthik’s family and friends have contacted the Indian Embassy in Germany and the Ministry of External Affairs to arrange for his remains to be returned to India. Plans are on to have his last ceremonies performed in his hometown.
