Shimla: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Himachal Pradesh Orange Alert for five districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two to three days. The alert covers Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla and Solan, where intense rainfall could trigger landslides, flash floods, rising river levels and disruptions to road travel.
Speaking to ANI, IMD Himachal Pradesh Centre Head Shobhit Katiyar said the southwest monsoon is expected to remain active across the state for at least the next week, with the heaviest rainfall likely in the mid-hill and adjoining lower hill regions.
Heavy Rainfall Likely Till Mid-July
According to the IMD, the Himachal Pradesh Orange Alert comes as monsoon activity is expected to intensify in phases. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue until around July 12, with another spell of increased rainfall forecast between July 12 and July 16–17.

Katiyar said districts including Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur are expected to receive the highest rainfall during this period. The active monsoon phase is likely to persist across much of the state until around July 22, before gradually weakening after July 23.
Below-Normal Rainfall Recorded So Far
Despite the forecast for heavy rain, Himachal Pradesh has recorded below-normal rainfall so far this monsoon season. Between June 1 and July 5, the state received approximately 151.5 mm of rainfall against the normal 180.36 mm, a deficit of nearly 16%.
Meteorologists believe the upcoming wet spell under the Himachal Pradesh Orange Alert could significantly improve seasonal rainfall totals in many districts.
Landslide and Flash Flood Risk Increases
The IMD has warned that prolonged rainfall may increase the risk of landslides, mudslides and flash floods, especially in vulnerable hill regions. Rising water levels in rivers, streams and other water bodies could also pose a serious threat.
Heavy rainfall may reduce visibility, make roads slippery and increase the chances of traffic accidents. Authorities have also cautioned that agricultural fields and horticulture crops may suffer partial damage due to continuous rain.
Residents and Tourists Advised to Stay Alert
Under the Himachal Pradesh Orange Alert, the IMD has urged residents and tourists to avoid venturing near rivers, streams and flood-prone areas. People have also been advised to monitor official weather updates and follow instructions issued by district administrations and disaster management authorities.
