Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhu proposes BRO to take over Wangtu-Attargoo-Mudh-Bhawa Pass route
Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has proposed that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) assume responsibility for crucial roadways, including the Wangtu-Attargoo-Mudh-Bhawa Pass route. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity between Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts, fostering economic growth and regional integration.
Strategic Importance of the Proposed Road
The Wangtu-Attargoo-Mudh-Bhawa Pass route, once developed, will become the second-highest motorable road in India, reaching an elevation of 4,865 meters. It will reduce the travel distance between Shimla and Kaza by approximately 100 km, offering an alternative to the existing route via Nako, Sumdo, and Tabo. BRO’s Role and Ongoing Projects
During a recent meeting with BRO’s Director General, Lt. Gen. Raghu Srinivasan, CM Sukhu was briefed on the progress of several vital infrastructure projects under Project Deepak. The BRO is responsible for upgrading and developing major national highways in Himachal Pradesh, including NH-03, NH-05, and NH-505 in the Manali and Sissu sectors. These projects are crucial for enhancing connectivity and improving the quality of life for residents in remote areas.
Additional Infrastructure Initiatives
Beyond the proposed road developments, CM Sukhu has highlighted the importance of other infrastructure projects, such as the Chamba-Bairagarh-Sach Pass-Killar road. This route holds strategic and logistical significance, connecting remote regions and serving as an alternative north-south corridor, especially when other routes like Manali-Leh or Rohtang are blocked. The road is currently maintained by the State Public Works Department and remains operational for about 4–5 months annually.
Future Prospects
The Chief Minister has also emphasized the need for the 13-km Tissa Tunnel, which would reduce the Chamba–Killar distance by 88 km and enable all-weather connectivity.
