The Government of India has approved a major step toward strengthening the public distribution system with the continuation of the SARTHAK PDS scheme, a unified framework aimed at modernising foodgrain distribution across the country. The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Narendra Modi, with a central outlay of ₹25,530 crore for the 16th Finance Commission cycle.
The SARTHAK PDS scheme will remain operational until March 31, 2031 and is designed to integrate multiple ongoing initiatives into a single, citizen-centric and technology-driven system. The reform agenda also consolidates assistance for intra-state movement of foodgrains and fair price shop (FPS) dealers’ margins under the framework of National Food Security Act, 2013.
Aim of SARTHAK PDS Scheme: Unified and Transparent Distribution System
The primary objective of the SARTHAK PDS scheme is to ensure uninterrupted financial support for foodgrain transport and handling while building a seamless, interoperable Public Distribution System (PDS). The initiative focuses on reducing leakages, improving efficiency, and enhancing beneficiary experience across states.
Under the SARTHAK PDS scheme, the government aims to establish a unified platform that connects supply chain operations and citizen services in real time. This will ensure faster delivery of food grains to over 81 crore beneficiaries covered under the National Food Security Act.

Digital platforms such as Mera Ration, Anna Mitra, and Anna Sahayata have already enhanced accessibility and transparency in service delivery. The SARTHAK PDS scheme further strengthens this ecosystem by integrating technology-driven reforms into a single national framework.
SMART PDS Integration Under SARTHAK PDS Scheme
Since April 2023, SMART PDS has acted as the technological backbone of India’s food distribution reforms. The SARTHAK PDS scheme builds upon this foundation by expanding features such as Aadhaar-linked ration cards, electronic Point of Sale (e-PoS) systems, automated fair price shops, and digital supply chain monitoring.
By combining automation with data-driven governance, the SARTHAK PDS scheme aims to ensure greater transparency, reduced corruption risks, and improved efficiency in delivering essential food grains.
