Flash Floods and Landslides Kill 31 in Northeast India as Torrential Rains Ravage Region
Assam, Arunachal, and Mizoram Among Worst-Hit States; Over 78,000 People Affected in Ongoing Crisis
Guwahati, June 1, 2025 — At least 31 people have died across Northeast India as torrential rainfall triggered flash floods and deadly landslides, causing widespread destruction in several states. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, and Manipur have all reported severe weather-related incidents over the past 48 hours.
The situation remains critical, with over 78,000 people affected and more rainfall forecast in the coming days. Authorities have issued red alerts in several districts and advised residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.
Assam: Flash Floods Paralyze Guwahati, Kill 9
In Assam, nine people lost their lives due to flash floods and landslides, particularly in Guwahati, Golaghat, and Lakhimpur districts. The state capital Guwahati witnessed severe urban flooding that disrupted vehicular traffic, submerged streets, and left residents stranded in their homes.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that more than 15 districts are affected, with several rivers flowing above the danger mark.

Arunachal Pradesh: Landslide Kills Seven in East Kameng
Arunachal Pradesh has reported nine deaths, including a tragic landslide incident on the Bana-Seppa Road in East Kameng district. A vehicle carrying two families — including four children and two pregnant women — was swept into a deep gorge late Friday night. All seven passengers perished.
Another vehicle traveling the same route narrowly escaped the disaster.
In a separate incident, two laborers died and two others were injured after a landslide struck a worksite along the Ziro-Kamle Road in Lower Subansiri district.
Mizoram: Myanmar Refugees Among the Dead
In Mizoram, five people were killed, including three refugees from Myanmar who were swept away by flash floods in Champhai district. Two others were rescued.
Other incidents in Mizoram:
- A man died in Serchhip district after a landslide collapsed his home
- A hotel and several houses were damaged in Lawngtlai district due to multiple landslides
- Two individuals trapped in debris were rescued by local authorities
Meghalaya: Six Dead in Weather-Related Incidents
Meghalaya reported six deaths resulting from a combination of landslides, tree collapses, lightning strikes, and drowning.
Emergency services remain on high alert as more rain is expected. Authorities have warned people living near slopes and riverbanks to evacuate to safer areas.
Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura Also Affected
While Manipur has not reported any deaths, flash floods and landslides have submerged large parts of the Imphal Valley. Rivers in Assam and Manipur continue to swell and are flowing above the danger level, raising fears of further inundation.

- Tripura reported one casualty caused by structural collapse during a downpour
Government and Disaster Response Measures
State governments have mobilized National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams for rescue and relief operations. Helicopters have been put on standby for aerial surveys and emergency evacuations in inaccessible areas.

- Suspension of schools in flood-hit areas
- Temporary road closures in landslide-prone zones
- Emergency helplines activated for public assistance
