Renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is bringing his much-anticipated film ‘Love and War’, starring Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal in lead roles. The movie, already creating significant buzz, is a big-budget spectacle. Initially reported to be made at ₹350 crore, the film’s budget has now reportedly increased.
Budget of ‘Love and War’ Rises
According to News18, citing sources close to Bhansali’s production, the director’s commitment to perfection is the reason behind the budget escalation. Sanjay Leela Bhansali reportedly does not approve of any frame that doesn’t match his vision, which has contributed to his reputation as a top filmmaker. However, repeated production extensions have pushed the budget higher.
Originally planned at ₹350 crore, the film’s budget has now risen to ₹425 crore, making it Sanjay Leela Bhansali most expensive project to date. The reported budget does not include the lead actors’ fees, as they have opted for profit-sharing deals instead, entitling them to a share of the film’s theatrical revenue.

Extended Shoot Schedule Contributes to Rising Costs
Initially, the shooting schedule was planned for 120 days, but it has now extended to 175 days to accommodate large-scale scenes and elaborate dance sequences. These additions have further contributed to the rise in production costs. The film is being produced under Sanjay Leela Bhansali banner, with Saregama also involved in the project.
Filmmaker Recovers ₹200 Crore Before Release
Despite the rising costs, reports indicate that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has already recovered around ₹200 crore through pre-release deals. Streaming rights were sold to Netflix for approximately ₹130 crore, and music and satellite rights fetched around ₹80 crore. However, even after this recovery, the film’s production cost has exceeded initial estimates, making it a risky venture in today’s unpredictable theatrical market.
Sources note that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has always been willing to take risks, and with ‘Love and War’, he continues his legacy of grand, ambitious filmmaking.
