With Rajnikanth vs Jr NTR, its a war in Southern Derby
It is likely to be one of the most well-discussed box-office battles of 2025 – Coolie and War 2, two South Indian legends Rajinikanth and Jr NTR, are going to lock horns against each other on the same date.
Coolie, which features Rajinikanth in a mass-action avatar, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, is announced to hit theatres on August 14, 2025. Only a day later will Jr NTR be sharing the screens with Hrithik Roshan to backdrop Ayan Mukerji’s War 2
Both Rajinikanth and Jr NTR command massive fan bases in the South – the former being revered as Tamil cinema’s ultimate superstar and the latter riding a wave of global popularity post-RRR. The obvious, rather rare, direct face-off between these two major crowd-pullers in the South propels the potential for a high-voltage box-office battle, one that will reach audiences far beyond Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh/Telangana and spill over into pan-Indian and overseas markets.
It has been predicted that this clash could be one of the busiest weekends in Indian cinema history in terms of collections as theaters brace themselves for record-breaking advance bookings. With these different factors combined and also the timing of the holiday of Indian Independence Day – there will be daily shows, morning till night in full house.
While Coolie seems to deliver Rajinikanth-style style, punch dialogues, and whistle-worthy action scenes, War 2 is all about high-octane stunts, spy-thriller tinges, and the first-time pairing of Jr NTR with Bollywood’s Hrithik Roshan.
Fans are not expected to pick one out of the two films, but see these two megastars explode on their screens one after the other. But for the box office, this is a war that must be closely watched, with both sides gunning for records.
